The first in a series of Instrumental EPs, The Machine Vol. 1 is a showcase of production styles which I have delved into over the past 10 years + of beatmaking.
Track 1; Pikey is one of the collaborations with Mark (Villholm) whom is the other half of our drum and bass outfit; Xybots. We collaborate on many levels and this particular instrumental came about from a xybots jam session. I played in the drums, bass and arranged the track, Mark played in the synth part. This is the first instrumental collaboration featured in this series of EPs.
Track 2; Machine - made solely on the Novation station X-station 25, experimenting with live audio recording directly into the soundcard.
I had ideas to get more consistent in playing live and a bunch of tracks then came from this method.
All the synth work was played in one take to a click and then drums added over the top after. I wanted to create soundscapes and something that sounded a little bit like space, or as I imagined it.
Track 3; Forgive to Proceed - Piano/Bass/Drums all played in, synth work arranged in after. I wanted to start making tracks with real elements and feel and this particular instrumental has it all. Emotion, curiosity, weirdness, anger, fire.. It just fell together, like many of my pieces do.
I was in a bad place at the time and was able to channel my hurt into a musical piece. Is what it is.
Track 4; On point - How I felt when I finally locked in my playing style and creative prowess. I had originally written the track for verses and a hook but decided against recording it after a while. Sometimes the moments when you make them are the only moments you can record them.
Track 5; 0101100 - I like to jam, and jam I do, a lot. This track is from a loop pedal Jam with Ciaron Elm and Oliver Pontefract. Oli played the hand sonic directly into the loop pedal and Ciaron whipped up a quick hypnotic riff. We then decided to add layers after and finally some Piano.
Experimenting at it's finest.
If you were expecting Boombap or just one certain style of instrumental, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place. What you'll hear now, and here on in from the next 15 months of releases, are ideas. And ideas a plenty.
Every single EP has one or more style on it, varying from Piano compositions, the beats, to loop pedal session recordings, to Drum and bass tracks. All part of my creative persona that is, Copius.
It's time to really live up to the name.
